In this dance 1st & 3rd couples start on opposite sides of the dance.  (FIG. 1)

 

1 – 8

1st and 2nd couples birl.  (Note it is the two women who set and the men who dance around.)  On bars 7 and 8, 1st couple turn right hand to face traditional 1st corner positions and 3rd couple cross right hand.  (FIG. 2)

9 - 12

1st couple set to 1st corners (bar 9), set to partner across the dance (bar 10), then turn with two hands and pivot right about to finish facing traditional 2nd corner positions.

13 - 16

1st couple set to 2nd corners (bar 13), set to partner up and down the dance (bar 14), then turn partner with left hand to 2nd place opposite side.  (FIG. 3)

17 - 24

1st and 3rd couples birl.  (Note that again the two women set and the men dance around.) On bars 23 and 24, 2nd couple cross right hand.  (FIG. 4)

25 – 28

Women dance three hands once round to the left.  (FIG. 5)

29 – 32

Men dance three left hands across once round.  (FIG. 6)

 

Repeat from new positions.

The Birl

This progression takes 8 bars to execute and uses both setting and traveling steps.

The formation begins from the sidelines and involves two couples.

The instructions below refer to standard set notation and not to the positions of dancers in this dance when they execute the formation. 

 

1 – 4

1st man and 2nd woman set to each other advancing, turn two hands 5/8 and pivot right about to finish back to back woman facing up, man facing down

WHILE

1st woman and 2nd man dance anti-clockwise around partners to face own partner.

5 - 8

1st and 2nd couples set to partner and turn right hand to own sideline.
